The Interesting Connection Between Your Home’s HVAC System and Sleep
We all know a good night’s sleep is super-important. If you are one of the millions of Americans who have trouble sleeping through the night, you’ve probably tried it all including watching what you eat and drink before bed, reducing screen time, and even sleeping supplements.
There’s another key comment to sleeping better and, believe it or not, it’s all controlled by that thermostat on your wall.
The Right Temperature for Better Sleep
The good folks at the Sleep Foundation found that the best bedroom temperature for sleep is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler than you thought?
Our bodies are programmed to experience a slight dip in core temperature in the evening, so turning the thermostat down at night can help with temperature regulation and send sleepy-time signals to your body.
Your actual ideal temp may vary but most sleep specialists recommend keeping it cool. Setting the thermostat between 60 to 67 degrees can help you achieve a more comfortable night’s sleep.
Smart Thermostats to the Rescue
Instead of worrying about setting the ideal temps for day and night, using a programmable thermostat or, even better, a smart thermostat can take the guesswork and hassle of maintaining ideal temps throughout the day and in to the night.
Programmable thermostats, for the most part, are pretty simple. You simply select the temps you want at any given time and day and the thermostat does the rest.
Smart thermostats take it one step further and learn your home’s heating and cooling habits and adjust themselves accordingly. They can even communicate with weather services and other smart devices to take comfort automation to the next level.
There are a few considerations when installing a smart thermostat and we are always happy to help. In fact, you can learn all about smart thermostats on our website and even schedule an appointment a free consultation.
More Tips for Keeping Cool and Getting the Best Night’s Sleep
Here are a few more tips to get your bedroom to right temperature for sleeping:
Close the blinds! This helps reduce heat from building-up during the day.
Got a basement? Since they tend to be cooler, a move downstairs may help you get more rest.
Open the windows to promote ventilation. (Although, if you’re running your AC during the summer months, it’s best to keep your windows closed.)
Take control of your bedroom’s humidity with a whole home humidifier. PS, we install those too!
And like we’ve already mentioned, don’t forget to turn down the thermostat at night. If you want a great deal and help installing a new smart Thermostat, be sure to give us a call!
